Welcome back to episode 23, I think it is, of the Pattern Play podcast. We got Bain and Sal returning the guys from Manchester United, our red devils to talk about some craziness really took me by surprise. But yeah, welcome back Balin. Welcome back. So how are we doing guys?
Sal:Thank you. All good. Happy to be back
Balin:Yeah, some, some mixed emotions.
Sal:I'm finally brave enough to show my face now, so, yeah.
Tim:The amam outers coming out of the woodwork? Listen, I don't think, I don't think there'll be many listeners who don't know what we're gonna be talking about right now, but for any, for anybody who is tuned in and is not up to speed, essentially Ameren went on a bit of a, a rant yesterday in his press conference. Would Ron be the right? Yeah, I think rant is the right, the right way of characterizing it. Went off a bit at the board. Gary Neville got a random stray bullet I think as well. The sort of sporting direction and his role, the manager versus his head coach. And that description. Sort of dis dissed himself a little bit as well. Thought that was funny and then walked out and, you know, it is what it is. Then this morning we find out Amerri has been fired. It's pretty big. I can't help but feel that might be a bit of an emotional reaction from both sides. Ska being shanked by Chelsea a few days before means that this comes fresh off the back of another big exit in the Premier League. Guys, where are we at? I mean, let's just kick off with no specific question. How are you feeling? Maybe we go there, Sal, kick us off. Where are you at?
Sal:It's still it's still mixed emotions. I think violin summed it up pretty well. I've, again, like I said, in the beginning of the season, probably within the first five episodes of the season fence fitter, right. This club has turned me into a fence that, and I'm still somewhat there. I think it's it's a little bit of sadness because I still like the guy. I still, as I've always said, you know, I like the way he speaks. I like what he appears to stand for, But the bottom line is it wasn't working out. It really wasn't. And every single watch this season was frustrating. You know, we'd have glimmers of. In the recent games, he'd play a four at the back and you are like, oh, okay. Things are changing. Things are progressing. You give the guy the benefit of the doubt. We don't have boomer, we don't have diallo, out injured, but still it looks like we don't have a cooking clue what's going on. We still look like we don't know how to play football, and that comes down to coaching at the end of the day. At the same time, as much as I wanna say that it's refreshing, like it's always nice to have a good fresh start. You know, start at square one. Here we go again, but. Here we go again. Right? Like we back in the same position that we've been in so many years down the line. I was excited when Marino got sacked. I was excited when Ole got sacked. I was excited when S got sacked. Now I'm gonna be excited when Ruen gets hacked and then what happens? I don't know. I am excited because it's a fresh thought, but I don't really know how to, I don't know what to expect anymore. I don't know what hope there is. There's still signs that the board don't know what they're doing. There's still signs that club is damaged from top to bottom. So I don't know. I don't know. Time will tell, but I am leaning more towards the exciting right?'cause we don't know what to expect now, so at least there's a little bit of excitement going into the game weeks.
Balin:I can agree. What, just concerns me a little bit more is I think there's some real structural problems at Man United. I think it's evident now that this can't just be like a head coach manager thing. There are major problems within this club. That's what our 10th manager since. Got sacked. And we've gone through some top managers, you know, we've had the likes of Moreno, we've had van Gal. We've had literally probably every recipe you could try to try and, and patch over to fix the situation. So I'm really just calling for at this point, and not even just in yours, but the glazes when there has to be real structural change at this point. You can't keep making. The same changes with just the head coach and a season or, or two seasons down the line. We always find ourselves back here. Here we are again. Like Al said, you know, obviously yes, there is a bit of excitement maybe from some of the fan base that, okay, this guy was doing certain things that just weren't working out. And he's gone. But then now what? Who's next? You know, somebody else comes in and he wants to go spend a hundred million on a, on another philosophy and he wants to play with the back four, and he wants to play possession football, and he wants to, and you're starting literally all over again. I'm a bit tired. I'm a bit tired at this point. And honestly, as a United supporter at this point I'm confused. I don't see what the way forward is with this club. We thought that Iios would maybe coming in. And, you know, breathe a bit of fresh air into this. And they've come in and they look just as confused as we do as the feds. Redcliffe and Barada and Cole. I don't think this sack is something that's just happened overnight. I don't think this is something that just after that press conference, you know, it just, this knee jerk reaction that, okay, we didn't like what you said. You're out. Clearly there's something that's been bringing behind the scenes and, it hasn't been working out for a while. And the board and management felt that already needs to go. Which concerns me because this was the guy that too long ago they were saying to another two, three years, this is our guy. We back him, you know? And here we are again.
Tim:I gotta say, while Rim had a really bad season last season, the numbers for this season, I mean, he's being sacked when you're in sick. Five of the six games in December, which, you know, is a pretty packed schedule in the league. Only one of the six I think was a defeat to Villa. I think there were two draws, three wins, one defeat to Villa. And then in January, obviously you get the one one with leads, but you know, the last time you lost other than Villa was Everton back in November. When you look at Chelsea, for example, and how they went from being pretty close to Arsenal to being 17 points behind, you're expecting that kind of run to precede being kicked out the door. I'm a little surprised the XG as well. I know Watching Man United Games as a man United fan is a bit of an intense experience, but you've got to admit the attacking side is often pretty effective. I mean, the XG is I think second to to city total G generated this season. I think it's United Second. That's kind of crazy if you think about it. So, sixth on the table. What four points separating, man United from 14th, I guess a few losses. If the board thinks shit, it's all gone, you know, it's gone south and you're gonna lose successive games, then maybe there's a, a feeling that it could quickly go south, but at the same time you are equal with Chelsea. And within touching distance of Champions League places, at this point in the project, that kind of feels exactly where you would expect to be. Am I wrong?
Sal:You, you know what it is. I was thinking about this today and I'm gonna say something very controversial. I think the league sucks. I don't think this league is as great as we think it is or as we wanna believe that it is. It's very exciting. Always will be. The premiering always will be a spectacle, but. Sometimes it's not necessarily that we are doing well or the project is OnCourse for, you know, being where we want it to be. Sometimes it's just that everyone else is also rubbish. Like honestly like even this Chelsea thing, right? Like it's shocking that we are equal on points with Chelsea. It's shocking because everybody expects united to be lower than Chelsea. But that is not a testament to how great we are doing. That's a testament to our rubbish Chelsea are doing. know what I mean? It's like this entire season from the beginning it was, oh, Liverpool running away with it. It was Arsenal running away with it. Then sit, you are close to Arsenal. Then it's like there's no consistency, there's no real, there, there's no real idea of who's rubbish and who's not, because it's one minute vow out of it. The next minute they are in the fight. So the next minute unites our allegation fights is the next minute they label with Chelsea, the next Chelsea contenders. Now they fight in Unit United it. It's a mess. So I don't think it's, its testament to the fact that Reuben was doing well because again, like you're saying, you watch United for nine, six minutes and you can see that this thing is not working. I kind of get what you're saying as well. There was arguably a much more time to sack Rubin. Then now, like earlier on in the season or the end of last season, however. I think us sacking him now puts us in a better position to be in the top four. I was watching a podcast before we jumped on one of my, one of these guys from the UK that I watch, and he was saying bring in Oleg and so shi or bring in Michael Kerik just for the end of the season. The league is so rubbish that vibes will get us top four. you know, call Ashford back.
Tim:about bringing in Ole I, I'd never, never think I did. The day.
Sal:Did I. Neither did I. But honestly, bring rash food back from lone. or lay back in just till the end of the season. And vibes will get us to the top four. And then next season we can rebuild. Honestly, ball and I can see your face. I hear you. But I'm just saying is what the league is right now. It is vibes that's gonna get us to the top four. There's no time for Tacticals. There's no time for, structure right now. Finish the season, get us top four. We shouldn't even be in that fight again, it's a testament to the fact that the league is not that great, so let's just ride this, these vibes until the end of the season, get into the top four, and then next season we can focus that. That's, that's my under opinion.
Balin:Look. It's complicated, man. I'm also just like, who's next? Guys? I can't go through this rollercoaster again, man. People are saying chubby. I'm hearing glass now. I'm hearing ola, I'm hearing all sorts of names. I can't stand another rollercoaster where a manager comes in and he promises us heaven and earth and we start to believe again and maybe the first two, three fixtures. The team looks decent. There's a bit of football being played and we think to ourselves, okay, just maybe might be onto something. And then two months later we're sitting on a podcast, up in arms about how disappointed we are that men united are in the position that they're in. I honestly. wish they, they would take their time with this process. Introspection has to be a real thing in 2026, man. As the glas, how do you still sit there, just watching all this in enjoy knowing that you are the head of this club and this club has literally suffered since you've come. Yes. You made your profits and words just escape me honestly at this point, because WI know what's gonna happen. I know we're gonna get in a manager. You're gonna have Dan Fletcher in now. Fletcher will study the ship. maybe we finished six, we finished eight. And I'm not happy about Fletcher coming in. I don't know why they chose Fletcher.
Sal:Me neither.
Balin:That's also just another I don't know, honestly. Just get only as a interim again, or even rude. Bring back. Rude. Rude. As a interim. A bit of, a bit more presence or,
Sal:Kerik. Anyway.
Balin:but not Fletcher man. gonna go play his kids in the midfield there. And it's, no, we can't,
Tim:Nepotism.
Balin:we can't have this united really just need to sit down really assess the situation at hand. been, I can't even, I can't even count how many years since we've actually had, a successful campaign. Yes. We finished second in the past with maybe Maureen Ole, but even then there were still so many question marks around, around the football and the performances at the time. I think it's really time for United to sit down and unpack some of the bad omen that are surrounding the club and some of the people that are in this club. And there has to be real. reform, others is just not gonna work. Man. This is, we're naive. We're crazy doing the same thing. Just, it's not gonna work. It's.
Tim:I'm on mute. Of course, Darren Fletcher. That just seems like an odd choice. What's the context there? Is, has he been backroom staff or He is
Sal:the director of football.
Tim:director of football. Right.
Sal:He's something like that. Like that man has a lot of power at this club. That's the only thing that can explain the fact that his sons, oh.
Balin:And his sons aren't even good, bro. No disrespect to Darren Fletcher. Darren Fletcher, club legend. Back in his day he did what he needed to do, solid player, but his kids can't play ball. From what I've seen from those kids, there's nothing that warrants a first team a debut for either one of them. I haven't seen the likes of Cheetah Obi for me, a lot better prospects than Jack Fletcher, or I think Tyler Fletcher, if I'm not mistaken. The both of them, he's a way better prospects, than those two are. Yet they're getting the time of day.
Sal:Yeah.
Balin:So I,
Sal:Hmm.
Balin:Again, now you see we've got, so outside of just the structural issues we have, there's nepotism in the club as well, bro, there's all sorts of just issues going on there that I can't stand anymore, honestly, guys.
Tim:Do you guys rate that? Do you rate Darren Fletcher's gonna go for a four at the back.
Sal:Definitely. The thing is you see, if he doesn't, he's gonna be crucified. That's the honest truth. If he doesn't do a four at the back, he's gonna be crucified.
Tim:Hmm.
Sal:you know, that actually brings me to another thing that I wanna touch on before we drift too far off the Ruben Armor system, the three at the back. I was doing a lot of reading today and I was thinking back to the signings that we made. They chose the guy right as the head coach, the manager, the head coach. Each title comes with a different level of responsibility, I think it sort of levels out, right? If you are the manager, you have certain responsibilities that are more than a head coach, but if you're the head coach, you actually have some responsibility to more than a manager, right? From a tactical point of view, from pure footballing point of view. You had a head coach obviously in the meetings that you had with him said he wants to play a certain system. Right. You knew that this is what's coming. You getting a manager who wants to play a three at the back system. As much as we may have spent money and we signed some great players, it is very evident that they didn't bold a squad that caters to his style of play whether or not I agree with Amar style, I've never been a fan of the three of the three at the back, right? I've played it in real life. I hated it. I played it in fifa. I hate it, Tim and I also I've watched it unfold many, many times in football, and I don't enjoy it. I never have. you chose this, you chose this, you backed this, you signed this, you paid for this, right? And then you don't sign the players that accommodate the system. So at the same time, that's why I say I'm so on the fence about it. So I'm hoping that if Fletcher comes in now and play plays for at the back, that maybe now the players will be able to complement that system. Play Umo on the wing. Play Diallo on the wing, leave the wing backs, leave the two tens, play them in their natural positions. Play Sesco as an out and out nine. Play Kya as a 10. Behind the front three, or on the wing or in a false nine. You can, you know, the options are kind of endless, so I'm hoping that it does work out. Also, copy manual. Put him in a midfield three and let's see, so, so yeah, I surely four at the back. I mean, if not then, then I don't know what we are doing.
Balin:He is definitely gonna appease the fans. He's gonna play for the back. I'm sure he's hearing all the rumors. He's heard everything that's been said about, ri. I don't see him trying to go against that. I think he'll play forward the back and just try to weather the storm for the rest of the season. But, just touching on rim there something that we are seeing all too often, particularly with United Managers. They always just seem to gravitate towards like a certain group of players. They can never just be like a collector. There's always gonna be some lamb that needs to be slaughtered. If it's like pop by under Moreno or 10 heg didn like Ahmad and now and now kobe and like Xxi Kobe and Xxi not getting the opportunities that maybe they feel or that even the fans think they deserve under.
Sal:All players that perform whenever they play. It's almost, you know, when you said that the problem problems are spiritual. almost as if like Amar Teeg, all these guys made a deal with the devil that like, I need to sacrifice my
Balin:Yeah, exactly.
Sal:who performs every game. I have to sacrifice him. Otherwise I'm never gonna make it like that. That's how it seems.'cause every time they play, they perform through
Tim:Right.
Sal:single manager we've had. We've had this issue.
Balin:Just.
Sal:player that doesn't get to play,
Balin:No,
Sal:was Don
Balin:don't even a big Exactly,
Sal:it.
Balin:So can we just get a manager? Maybe all we need is a really good man manager. Maybe we just need somebody that like tactics and all that aside, can just get the squad. No, even only, I guess he was good at that. I'll give him credit for that, but I think we just need a manager that can. Can just keep squad together, like just have a bit of unity throughout the season and have no drama and have no the managers falling out with Kobe. And like you, it's one thing to fall out with players when players aren't doing the things that you require them to do. But it's a whole nother thing where we are not completely understanding what your grudge is against certain players. It's your pride. That's literally getting in the way of you putting in players that are gonna come to your aid. Man. I mean, xxi, look at xxi against leads. XXI came on the last 20 minutes. He was our bright spot. He was a spot that, he was brilliant man. He came in immediately assist for Kya and he was creating, he know, spreading the balls around getting involved. And I'm just like, you know this and he's a senior player, you know, he is one of your senior players. Put'em in, stop sacrificing the Fletcher Boys and things like that unnecessarily. So them in these unco uncompromising positions or matches where they don't have the experience to, to manage these situations when you've got somebody like Xxxi there just'cause of your pride. Again, I just think it's pride.
Tim:Do you, where do you guys see it going? I mean, they're saying that Darren Fletcher is gonna be caretaker until the end of the season, right? That is the reporting I'm seeing end of the season is a long time. There is so much football now. I mean, we are talking like a crazy January of so many games. Are we. Are we expecting a drop in the league? Are you expecting to pretty much stay the same vibes as you were saying, Sal, that basically the league is at a point where you've got good enough players to, to walk to like a sixth, maybe a seventh, maybe an eighth? Or do you think you're gonna get like an a proper new manage manager bounce almost from Darren Fletcher with a four at the back where you're like, okay. This just works like it's a normal formation that most people are familiar with. There's no oddities going on, you know? I mean, what do you think is about to play out?
Sal:I think that this is a situation similar to when we when we suck Moreno, it's like with the ole interim thing. I never backed him as a permanent manager, but I backed him as the interim manager.
Tim:I.
Sal:I think it's like a similar situation where you just need a guy gonna come in and literally throw words like DNA around and be happy to play and play for the badge, and literally keep things simple. with Moreno, he's a complicated guy. He was a complicated guy. It needed to be defensive, it needed to protect certain things, it needed to be pragmatic. It needed to accommodate certain things and cater to certain opponents. With Amar, same thing. If you're gonna play three defenders, which is technically five, but he's technically three, do you understand that formation makes no sense? I'm sorry, whoever came up with that nah. Anyway, that is complicating football. Right when you can come in and you can say, you know what we're playing 4, 4, 2, or 4, 4, 3. Four, three. Three, four defenders, a group of midfielders and some attackers, and you simply fire football. And you say, guys, go out there and play. Go out there and fight. You guys train together every day. You guys know each other. You stay together, you travel together, you know each other well enough to combine on the pitch. You know how to play professional football in that instance. I don't see why top four is not possible. We definitely should not drop from sixth place. It should not happen. We
Tim:Do you think it.
Sal:I don't think so. I like, and this is me being sensical, right? If, and United is a very nonsensical club, so but I just don't think it should be possible. again, if you keep things simple, play out till the end of the season. Just play football. Be happy to play, have pride and play them. We should be able to get into the top four. At least keep top six, right? Ian? Top six is not a failure after last season. It isn't. But top four is therefore the taking. Have some motivation for that, And then next season we get a new manager. I don't know who, I don't know who's gonna be available. I don't know what the market is gonna be, but don't rush the process. There's already moments about potentially not remaining in the role till the end of the season. There's chatter that he'll come in, he'll take over from, I think we play on Wednesday. He'll take over from that match day. He led a training session today, but that they might bring in an interim manager for the rest of the season. I just pray to the Lord or mighty. That is not gonna be another Ralph Rangnick situation. I wanted it to be another ole situation, but let it end with the. End of the season. Don't let it carry over now into a permanent contract. Get somebody to just stabilize the ship and then bring someone else in. That's all we need.
Tim:You on the same page.
Balin:Yeah. I'm hoping he can just steady the ship. I'm not gonna expect much from Darren Fletcher, honestly. I feel like all they had away with people I don't think Darren Fletcher has that about him. There there's never been anything particularly appealing to me personally about Darren Fletcher. There's always been a bit of magic around Ole, so I think with. Ole He, he gets that kind out of the players a little bit easier. But look again, like Sal said, Dan Fletcher is the kind to, you know, push the narrative. of this is Manchester United, get it done, bro. We play hard we give it our all we play for the badge. So I think if that's the message that he puts out, then he might get a tune out of the players. I think he might looking back with Ammar. I don't think there were any players that benefited from a system. I think maybe outside of maybe Harry McGuire. And I guess we saw good
Tim:The lift.
Sal:Mason
Balin:Yeah, I was about to say maybe Mason Mount. But I think outside of that man, you got two, three players that benefited from a system. Otherwise everybody else just looked so confused, man. So I think, like Sal said you just go, you revert back to a 4, 4, 2, 4, 3, 3. Simple. You know, these are things that you'll find majority of your players even growing up. These are systems that we understand. You could slot me into a 4, 4, 3, 3 and a four, A 4, 4, 2. And I perfectly understand my role. You know, I'd understand what's required of me. So I think, yeah, just steady the ship. Put players in positions that you know they can handle. Hopefully we can start to see the best of some of the players, man, I think Bruno as well in the midfield three caama would be happier in a midfield three. Kobe would be happier in the midfield. Three would look better in the midfield three, you know, I think even Cisco, Cisco might benefit from having booma out white properly, you know? And maybe trying to deliver a couple of balls and things like that for him. The likes of dlo, maybe dlo might look half, half decent, and that's I know I'm reaching a bit, but
Sal:nah.
Balin:least he'll know what his po his position is. You know, what you're required to do. You know, just up and down that line. There isn't anything too complicated about it, and I think that's what you needed at United at this moment that Amri just tried to be too. I don't know if tacticals the
Tim:complicated.
Balin:That's literally what it was, man. Football at the end of the day. Yes. Tactics and things like that matter, but it's talent, bro. It's talent, it's hard work. And who are the best 11 players on the pitch on the day they deliver? I mean, you look at Arsenal, you look at Arsenal this past weekend against Bourmouth, the team with the 11 better players. It's just won the game. It's just that simple. Declan Rice steps up the boys get the job done. And sometimes that what, that's what football comes down to. And I think it's something that I actually miss about football where it's just like. Put 22 guys on the pitch and the better 11, let the better 11 win.
Sal:The purity. The
Balin:that's
Sal:football.
Balin:period of football, man and I think we just complicate these things too much. And this is something with United that's been a problem for too long. You should be better than leads. Just beat them. Let's leave the four the 3, 4, 3 and all that. Just put that aside. On your best day, are you better than Dominic? Dominic Okay, then let's just not, let's not beat around the bush, you know? So I think Fletcher will bring that back.
Tim:Speaking of keeping it simple, I want a simple prediction. Next game, you play Burnley you're away from home. So you're going to Turf Mall. Darren Fletch is four at the back. Let's be honest. We all know it's gonna be a four. Are you gonna win the game? Is it gonna be a simple sh I occasionally dabble in a bit of betting. Maybe I wanna make a bet. What are we saying?
Sal:I will be honest. I think we are winning by three goals or more. I'm serious. I pro I'm genuinely serious. I think we're gonna win by three goals or more. It's gonna be that, it's gonna be like a freedom thing. This is like a less toxic version of Moreno, where it's you know what? We are free. Kobe's gonna be free, everyone's gonna be free. X's gonna play. We are gonna, we are gonna win by like three goals or more. That it's either that or we are gonna die like that. No InBetween that's what I see genuinely.
Tim:Either a win or a loss then for sale. Great prediction. You're gonna tell me it's gonna be a draw and we just cover all bases.
Sal:Three goals or more violin. You
Balin:Look, I think there,
Sal:before.
Balin:there's definitely gonna be some players that are gonna try and make a statement, the likes of Zia. I think if he gets a couple of minutes, he's really gonna try, try and make a statement. A couple of players that maybe under rim didn't feel like they were really getting them the opportunity to express themselves or really gonna step up. So I do think it's a game and un benley aren't doing well at all. Like it's benley.
Tim:They're very average.
Balin:Yeah, very average. So the team that we should be beating, I do think we, we will beat them. But I just, I always worry about us when we play against teams where. you know, there, there's a thing about United, I think with United, there's still a part of them that thinks they're a big team and there's a lot of complacency that slips in when they play these smaller teams. And that's why we always get a lot of their big performances when you see them against the likes of Arsenal and City and Liverpool.'cause then they switch on. There's no complacency.
Sal:you remember Oles first game?
Balin:Yeah, I remember that with Linard and, and, and Marcia and
Sal:it was in,
Balin:Cardiff.
Sal:we, we won, like we won like five, one or something. No, it was five and
Balin:Yeah.
Sal:time we scored five goals since Fergie left. That's freedom.
Balin:yeah. That's freedom.
Sal:really see something like that happening again. Genuinely,
Balin:I hope so.
Sal:yeah. Same.
Tim:For your sakes, guys. I hope four. For a WI think you deserve it. After the last 13 years of, what is it you averaging 1.3 years a manager at the moment. Which a you need to extend that out a little bit. If one of these projects are gonna come through fruition. One of these projects needs to be actually backed for once. So, Hey, there we go.
